The government has taken this decision with Corona in mind. The government has a surplus of 435 lakh tonnes of foodgrains. This includes 272.19 lakh tonnes of rice and 162.79 lakh tonnes of wheat. ”

The government spends Rs 1.4 lakh crore annually

The government provides 5 kg of subsidized foodgrains per month to beneficiaries at 5 lakh ration shops across the country under the PDS system. This costs the government Rs 1.4 lakh crore annually. Available at subsidized rates by ration shops under the National Food Security Act. It sells rice at Rs 3 per kg, wheat at Rs 2 per kg and corn at Rs 1 per kg.

The economy could lose 120 120 billion
